How Mistral’s ‘Le Chat’ Became Europe’s AI Darling

Move over ChatGPT, Europe has its own AI powerhouse. Many users in France will have already heard of Mistral’s ‘Le Chat,’ but others should be aware of one of Europe’s AI darlings.

In February 2025 French President Emmanuel Macron was on French national TV asking people to “download Le Chat”, Mistral AI’s chatbot. Apparently, Macron uses the technology daily and has made no attempts to hide his patriotism in doing this. By using words such as “champion européen”, “souveraineté”, “contrôle”, “indépendance” he transforms a simple AI chatbot into a symbol of national/European autonomy.

But what is Mistral AI and should you be using it if you are a proud European too? We investigated the history and the founders of the tech firm to find out more.

Why You Should Follow Mistral AI

In May 2025 Reuters reported how Mistral AI had tripled its revenue in the previous 100 days. At the time the firm was valued at just $6 billion. This came as no surprise to some, especially as leading banks like BNP Paribas had already started a relationship with the startup, starting with experiments in September 2023, formalized in a multi-year partnership in July 2024.

In October 2024 Sophie Heller, Chief Operating Officer at BNP Paribas Commercial, Personal Banking & Services, said that Mistral AI  is helping the bank hyper-personalize digital services for its customers. Mistral AI was described as the latest technology at the time.

In February 2025 Orange also announced its collaboration with Mistral AI. Christel Heydemann, CEO of Orange, said that “by joining forces with Mistral AI, we are taking a major step towards establishing Europe as a global leader in AI.”

In September 2025, Mistral AI announced that it was looking to raise a further €1.7 billion. The funding round was led by leading semiconductor equipment manufacturer, ASML Holding NV (ASML).  Existing investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, DST Global, and NVIDIA.

This latest funding round puts the value of the firm at approximately $13.8 billion.

Key Advantages of Le Chat Over ChatGPT in 2026

We asked Mistral AI’s chatbot to help us with this question. It listed several key advantages that the company is known for, including:

Cutting-Edge Technology

  • Models are designed to be efficient, scalable, and capable of handling complex tasks.

Fast Inference Speed

  • Mistral’s models are optimized for low-latency responses, making them suitable for real-time applications like chatbots, customer support, and interactive AI tools.

Efficient Resource Usage

  • Mistral AI focuses on computational efficiency, allowing their models to run on less powerful hardware compared to some competitors. This reduces costs and energy consumption.

Scalability

  • Mistral’s infrastructure supports scalable deployment, meaning the models can handle a large number of requests simultaneously without significant slowdowns.

Benchmark Performance

  • In independent benchmarks, Mistral’s models frequently rank among the top for both speed and accuracy, sometimes outperforming much larger models in specific tasks.

Specifics Include:

  • Mistral Small 3.1 delivers inference speeds of 150 tokens per second, outperforming comparable models like Gemma 3 and GPT-4o Mini while maintaining high text performance and multimodal understandingmistral.ai.
  • Mistral 7B achieves sub-100ms latency on A10G GPUs, making it suitable for real-time applicationsleanware.co.
  • Mistral Large 3, using a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, activates only 41 billion parameters per token out of 675 billion total. This design allows it to combine the knowledge of a much larger model with the inference speed of a smaller one

While ChatGPT offers a more polished interface and broader ecosystem, Le Chat shines in speed, cost, and European data sovereignty.

Mistral AI Founders: The Visionaries Behind Europe’s AI Rise

Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 by three French AI experts with pedigrees from Big Tech giants.

Arthur Mensch (CEO): A 33-year-old alum of École Polytechnique and former DeepMind researcher, Mensch drives Mistral’s vision for open-source AI. He’s become a symbol of French tech ambition, with a net worth now over $1.1B post-2025 funding according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Guillaume Lample (CTO): 34, ex-Meta AI lead who helped build Llama models. Lample focuses on Mistral’s technical edge, emphasizing efficiency and multilingual capabilities.

Timothée Lacroix (Chief Scientist): Also 34, former Meta engineer. Lacroix oversees research, pushing for scalable, sovereign AI infrastructure—like the upcoming Mistral Compute.

These founders, all in their 30s, have turned Mistral into Europe’s fastest-growing AI unicorn

2026 Outlook: Mistral Compute and EU Sovereignty

Mistral Compute is launching in 2026, promising independent EU infrastructure to rival US clouds. With an edge in AI Act compliance, Mistral could become the “European benchmark” for regulated sectors.

Other than BNP Paribas and Orange, the company already counts companies like Cisco, Stellantis, Snowflake, and Veolia.

Conclusion

While not yet dethroning ChatGPT globally, Le Chat is fueling EU AI sovereignty and potentially reshaping fintech personalization, compliance, and innovation for 2026. If you’re in banking or tech, it’s worth checking out the “champion européen” vibe.

And, for those of our readers based in Poland, good news. The Mistral AI team have just opened a local presence in the Polish capital Warsaw.
