King Charles will sit the frontier labs down in Scotland this week to ask whether a shared set of principles is needed for a technology its own builders now describe as a threat.
Who Is Going to Dumfries House?
Executives from NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic are expected, with UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan. OpenAI has confirmed CFO Sarah Friar, not Sam Altman. Earlier reporting named Jensen Huang, Demis Hassabis and Vatican adviser Paolo Benanti among those invited. About 30 people were invited. Buckingham Palace has not published a guest list.
The venue is Dumfries House, headquarters of The King’s Foundation. Buckingham Palace said the meeting would discuss how AI can benefit society and contribute to “the flourishing of both people and the planet.” A royal official said the King will “convene, engage, listen,” but will not issue a policy view.
Why Is London Doing This Now?
Last week a departing Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, warned that fast-moving systems could threaten the species.
A serving colleague, Evan Hubinger, publicly agreed.
On Saturday Dario Amodei published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” and asked labs to slow capability growth. Donald Trump has since rejected a coordinated slowdown. A Chinese state tabloid, Global Times, called the plan a “Cold War playbook” aimed at China.
What Has the King Actually Said About AI?
Here is a short timeline on what King Charles has said about AI:
November 2023, Bletchley Park
- Video message to the AI Safety Summit. He puts advanced AI next to electricity, the splitting of the atom and the web, praises the chance of better medicine and net zero, and says the risks need “urgency, unity and collective strength.” He also says that if the benefits are to be real, governments and firms must work together against “its significant risks.”
September 2025, Windsor
- King Charles hosts Jensen Huang and Sam Altman at the Windsor banquet for President Trump’s state visit, the same week as the UK–US tech investment push.
November 2025, St James’s Palace
- Hands Huang a copy of the Bletchley speech and says he needs a word. Huang tells the BBC the King “obviously cares very deeply about AI safety.”
April 2026, Washington
- The King meets Huang, Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos and others. He talks startups and the “valley of death.”
September 2026, Dumfries House
- He plans to ask whether AI can be developed for the good of humanity and whether a shared set of principles would help. He will “convene, engage, listen,” and will not issue a policy view.
