Antoine Moyroud is the Paris partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners who led its investment in Mistral AI’s €105 million seed round in June 2023, when the company was four weeks old and worth €240 million. In September 2026 it raised money at more than €21 billion.
That is why the bet still gets talked about. A first investment into a company that barely existed became a stake in one of Europe’s most valuable private tech firms, and Moyroud is the partner who made it.
Who is Antoine Moyroud?
Moyroud is a Lightspeed partner who came up through data, not finance.
His story began in prépa, the maths-heavy classes that lead to France’s top universities, which Moyroud was thrown out after a year. He then took a dual degree in business and languages in Lyon and went into data. He worked at FlixBus in Munich, then helped Dataiku, the French data-software company, break into Germany. It grew from 40 to 200 people in his two years there.
Data was also his way into venture capital. At EQT Ventures, Henrik Landgren, Spotify’s former head of analytics, was building software to spot start-ups from online signals. Moyroud joined in 2019 and rose to principal in Paris. Lightspeed hired him as a partner in September 2022, and in 2025 Forbes put him on its 30 Under 30 Europe list.
How Did Lightspeed Win Mistral’s Seed Round?
Lightspeed had spent months studying the field, and it had the right introductions, which is how a four-week-old company became its biggest early bet.
The firm was already an investor in Stability AI, and it had looked at large language model teams in India, the US and Europe. A few were strong technically, but “they hadn’t thought about the second order effects of large language models,” Moyroud said at the time.
The Mistral link began at a conference on AI for formal maths, where he met Guillaume Lample, then at Meta. Later Stanislas Polu, the founder of Dust, made an introduction. That was when, he says, they realised Arthur Mensch was starting a company with Lample and Timothée Lacroix. Bloomberg adds another name. Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve, Alan’s founder and a Mistral adviser from day one, talked Lightspeed into leading.
Moyroud had rarely seen a team like it. A handful of top researchers worked alongside people who grasped the business case and, rightly or wrongly, the political one. Lightspeed’s own Mistral page lists two other names on the deal, Paul Murphy and James Ephrati.
How Much is Lightspeed’s Stake in Mistral Worth?
Nobody outside the two companies knows Lightspeed’s stake in Mistral, because Lightspeed has never said how much of the company it actually owns.
On paper, Mistral is now valued at more than 87 times its seed valuation. Every round since has diluted the early shareholders, meaning each original share is a smaller slice of the company, so the real multiple is lower.

Lightspeed added to its stake at least twice. It invested again in December 2023, in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz, and Anjney Midha joined Mistral’s board. It invested again in June 2024, and Mistral still listed it among its investors in 2025 and 2026.
What Else Has Antoine Moyroud Backed?
Moyroud has mostly backed first rounds in AI and, lately, the hardware around it.
These are the Lightspeed rounds after Mistral that he lists on LinkedIn as lead or co-lead investor:
The biggest is Ineffable Intelligence, the London lab of David Silver, who led the AlphaGo work at DeepMind. Its law firm called the $1.1 billion round Europe’s largest ever seed financing. Lightspeed co-led it with Sequoia. The board seat went to Lightspeed co-founder Ravi Mhatre, not Moyroud.
Drones and robots came later. Lightspeed led the seed of Orqa, a Croatian drone maker, in December 2024. The company was already on its third life, he says, and Lightspeed bet on its knack for reinvention. Once you have a strong reconnaissance drone, he said, you have essentially built the enterprise drone of tomorrow. Kyber followed in June 2026, and he called it a no-brainer. Its founder, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, is the lead developer of VLC.
How Does Antoine Moyroud Pick Founders?
Moyroud wants founders “obsessed with a problem” who can pull strong people around them. His interviews and posts fill in the rest:
- Research talent is not enough. Plenty of AI builders are leading researchers, “but few of them have a vision beyond the technical field”, he wrote in 2023.
- Kempf’s years running VLC made him “a rare kind of founder-market fit” for Kyber.
- Relationships run long. He met Jérémy Goillot when both volunteered at Web Summit. About eight years later, Lightspeed backed Goillot’s company.
- He likes grit. One founder answered a doubt in a pitch with: “come join me tomorrow at 5am when I’m breaking up fights in the warehouse and we’ll see if you still think that.” He called it one of the coolest responses he had ever heard.
How Do You Pitch Antoine Moyroud?
Pitch him with a short LinkedIn message, once you are sure you are the right fit.
His focus is “the intersection of AI, design and developer tools”, plus data, infrastructure and hardware. He mostly leads first rounds, which his LinkedIn calls inception rounds. Anything earlier he leaves to specialists, whose toes he sees no point treading on.
Then write. His profile asks for it: “If you’re looking to connect and we haven’t met, just drop me a note with context!” Keep the context sharp, because he meets 1,000 to 1,200 founders a year.
Spend less time on the deck. In a 2025 Sifted column he told founders to stop hunting for the perfect template. Prepare for the questions every investor asks. And know what you want from him, too. Early founders “usually need the most help with hiring and commercial introductions”, he says.
What does Antoine Moyroud say about European AI?
That sovereignty is something Europe has to win from customers, not force on them. He put it in three sentences in June:
You don’t get sovereignty by forcing people to buy local. You get it by building local companies people actually want to buy from. Globally.

On Mistral he is not a neutral voice, since Lightspeed still owns shares. Large 4 scored 38 on the Artificial Analysis index in preview, behind seven Chinese open models. He replied on X that, as far as he knew, Mistral had never claimed to be the best overall.

Public records do not show it. Mistral, a French SAS, does not have to publish its board. Companies House lists him as a director of one UK company, Hook Technology, since October 2025.
It has not been disclosed. Lightspeed led the €105m seed at a €240m valuation and backed later rounds, but neither company has published its stake.
AI, data, infrastructure and developer tools, plus drones and robotics, usually in a company’s first round. Rounds he lists as lead or co-lead investor range from €3.5m to $1.1bn.
