(First in the VC AI series)
Getting capital is hard. Getting the right capital is harder.
For founders building in AI, the difference between a good VC and a great one can decide whether a company merely survives or becomes category-defining. That is why we are starting a series on the investors who sit at the very top of the Forbes Midas List, the ranking that still carries the most weight when measuring individual partners on actual outcomes.
We begin with one of the most polarizing and consequential names on that list: Shaun Maguire, General Partner at Sequoia Capital.
Shaun Maguire’s Two Weeks in August 2026
In the space of two weeks in August 2026, Shaun Maguire watched the SpaceX stake he helped lead for Sequoia become a reported position worth more than $29 billion. He also led a $1 billion round for nuclear startup Valar Atomics, joined its board, and continued serving as a newly appointed adviser to the Pentagon’s Science, Technology and Innovation Board.
He ranked No. 22 on the 2026 Forbes Midas List.
A year earlier, more than 1,000 tech founders had signed an open letter demanding that Sequoia publicly disavow him after controversial comments about New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Sequoia issued no public statement. Maguire refused to retract the remarks. Despite the backlash, major funding rounds and institutional roles have continued.
Shaun Maguire and the Sequoia Machine
Shaun Maguire, 40, is a general partner at Sequoia Capital focused on seed and early-stage deals in hard tech, or “atoms” as he prefers to call it. He joined the firm in July 2019 after three years as a partner at GV.
Sequoia itself has become one of the most aggressive AI investors in the industry. For the fourth consecutive year it ranks as the most active generative AI investor by deal count, according to PitchBook. In 2026 the firm committed roughly $10 billion to AI and what it calls reindustrialization, the largest single commitment in its 54-year history. That capital is flowing into frontier model companies, including increased stakes in Anthropic alongside existing positions in OpenAI and xAI, as well as AI infrastructure and the physical systems that support large-scale AI: energy, chips, manufacturing and defense technology.
Maguire’s technical background and focus on capital-intensive hard-tech companies sit at the intersection of these two priorities. The firm’s brand combined with his own credibility gives him rare access to the most technically complex and capital-hungry startups in the market.
Shaun Maguire’s Unlikely Rise
Shaun Maguire failed Algebra II and finished 10th grade with a 1.8 GPA. He left school early through California’s proficiency exam.
From there the trajectory changed sharply. He earned a BS in mathematics from USC, an MS in statistics from Stanford, an MS in control and dynamical systems from Caltech, and a PhD in physics from Caltech under quantum information pioneer John Preskill. Maguire has described the doctorate simply as “thinking about black holes.”
He then spent time as a DARPA contractor, including a three-month deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. After returning he co-founded the cybersecurity company Expanse (originally Qadium). Palo Alto Networks later acquired the company; Maguire’s LinkedIn and Pentagon biography list the figure at $1.25 billion.
Shaun Maguire, the Musk Whisperer: Signature Wins
The clearest measure of Maguire’s impact sits in a handful of high-conviction bets:
- Led Sequoia’s first investment in SpaceX in 2019 at a $36 billion valuation. After the June 2026 IPO the position was reported at more than $29 billion (roughly 1.5% of the company).
- Led or co-led Sequoia’s investments across the broader Musk ecosystem: X, xAI, The Boring Company and Neuralink.
- In early August 2026 led a $1 billion equity round for nuclear startup Valar Atomics and joined its board.
- Days later Sequoia co-led a $250 million Series C in military drone maker Neros at a $2.5 billion valuation.
- Has served as a director of Nasdaq-listed lidar company Luminar since June 2021.
- At GV (2016–2019) backed IonQ, SpinLaunch, Lambda School, Lightmatter and others.
The Information later dubbed Maguire “The Musk Whisperer.” The label stuck because he has been one of the few outside investors with consistent access across Elon’s companies and is unusually willing to speak in detail about how Musk actually operates.
Shaun Maguire’s Investment Thesis
Hardware and physical-world technology are returning as the dominant return driver for the next 25 years, with AI as the catalyst. Maguire has argued internally at Sequoia that the firm made almost all its money in hardware for its first 25 years, then almost all in software for the next 25. He believes the cycle is now flipping back.
What Founders Need to Clear with Shaun Maguire
From public interviews and portfolio patterns, Maguire prioritises extreme technical competence and a willingness to bet on one’s own ability and deliver repeatedly. He has a detailed framework for assessing intelligence and has said he looks for people who are “really talented but a little bit off the radar.”
He also values founders who are irrationally motivated and, in the best cases, combine deep technical ability with strong sales skills and empathy. That combination, he has said, is the real magic. Founders building pure software consumer apps or low-technical-depth ideas are unlikely to get far.
Shaun Maguire’s Public Persona and the Backlash
Maguire’s public presence on X is defined by three recurring themes: Elon Musk and physical-world technology, support for Israel, and deliberate provocation.
The most consequential episode began on 4 July 2025. Maguire posted:
“Mamdani comes from a culture that lies about everything
It’s literally a virtue to lie if it advances his Islamist agenda
The West will learn this lesson the hard way”
An open letter signed by more than 1,000 founders demanded that Sequoia denounce him. Maguire refused to retract the remarks. Sequoia issued no public statement; its chief operating officer later resigned. A counter-letter defending free speech also gathered substantial support. Major funding rounds and institutional roles have continued.
Influence Beyond the Check
In late May 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appointed Maguire to the Pentagon’s newly created Science, Technology and Innovation Board. The role places him at the intersection of private capital and national security strategy at a moment when AI, drones, energy and manufacturing have become core defense priorities.
He continues as an investor in SpaceX and defense-adjacent companies such as Neros and Mach Industries while advising the government. The combination is unusual: few venture partners sit simultaneously on the capital side of the most advanced dual-use companies and inside the formal advisory structure of the Pentagon.
Away from the boardroom and the feed, Maguire is a marathoner, a former competitive CS:GO player, and a self-described “proud Jew” who owns a home in Israel. Those details are not incidental. They shape both the intensity of his public persona and the lens through which he evaluates founders operating in high-stakes environments.
Open Verdict
Searches for “Shaun Maguire” have jumped roughly sixfold since the SpaceX IPO and the latest funding announcements. No long-form editorial profile currently ranks highly. Despite the earlier open letter, capital continues to flow through Sequoia and defense officials continue to take his advice.
Whether that combination is a feature or a bug depends on who you ask. Sequoia has chosen silence. Maguire has chosen the opposite. The record remains the only statement that matters.

How we Chose:
Other than the Midas List, which highlights individuals, there are several lists of the actual VC firms themselves. One of them is the CB Insights Smart Money report which presents the top VCs outperforming the market. Another is PitchBook’s Top VC Firms ranked by investment outcomes. There is also a more niche report called the Strebulaev-Jackson Venture Ranking. We have looked at all of them in selecting individuals to highlight.
