Fredrik Cassel has spent more than two decades at the Swedish firm that first backed Spotify when the music industry was widely seen as dying. He is the partner most closely associated with that early conviction, and he is the one who has spoken publicly about Creandum’s new $750 million fund, announced today.

Who Is Fredrik Cassel At Creandum?

Cassel studied engineering physics and later ran the largest search engine in the Nordics before he joined the firm. On Creandum’s site he wrote that he met founder Staffan Helgesson in 2003, when Helgesson was just starting the firm: “he told me that he wanted to back individuals building technologies that were capable of changing markets. He only had global category leaders in mind. I was immediately sold and applied as an Analyst. Even though we now have other titles, I am still an analyst at heart.”

He has also said he has never been driven by the making-money part of the job. “To me, financial returns are a byproduct of something much more exciting: Meeting and gaining conviction with outstanding entrepreneurs, working together through the ups and downs, seeing teams level up and pull through.”

Cassel is a Kauffman Fellow and has appeared on both the Forbes Midas List Europe and the global Midas List.

How Did Fredrik Cassel Back Spotify In 2008?

Cassel first heard about the company at a recruiting event at KTH in Stockholm in 2007. In a later interview he recalled the initial reaction: “The first thought was, ‘This is impossible, right?’ As you were downloading your MP3 files you would then un-RAR them, rename them, try to get some order into that crazy mess. And here was a company saying, ‘We have all the world’s music, it’s searchable, and it plays instantly.’ It was impossible, right? It sounded completely impossible.”

He signed up and became roughly user 704. “And then we tried it out. I think I’m user number 704, or something? And it worked! It was just fantastic.” The pitch that it needed to be better than piracy was already clear, and the product delivered it. Creandum later participated in the company’s first institutional round in 2008, alongside Northzone. Cassel has written that the night after Spotify passed one million monthly active users, Daniel Ek said the company could reach 100 million, and his jaw dropped.

What Is Fredrik Cassel’s Role In Lovable?

Cassel has stayed close to products that generate strong user affection. When Creandum led Lovable’s $15 million pre-Series A in February 2025, he wrote on the firm’s site: “The last time I kept waking up in the middle of the night thinking about the user love for a product we were in discussions with was in 2007, in the process towards investing in Spotify.”

During the short diligence process the Creandum team built a founder portal, a glucose monitor widget and a landing page for hot-air-balloon rides. Lovable lets people build production-ready software by prompting rather than coding. The company has since raised multiple rounds and is now valued at $13.3 billion. The firm’s early involvement is covered in our ownership note. Co-founder Fabian Hedin is profiled in our Who Is Fabian Hedin piece.

He has also worked with companies including Kahoot!, Black Forest Labs, Modal, Rillet, Kry, Depop and Virta Health. The firm more broadly has exposure to names such as Klarna and Trade Republic. In comments on the new fund he has described AI investments as a net positive for Creandum.

What Is Creandum’s $750 Million Fund?

Creandum has raised $750 million for its eighth fund, the largest to date. The capital came from around 30 institutions in the United States and Europe. Cassel has said the firm plans to make about 30 investments with the new fund over the next two years. The prior fund closed at €500 million in 2024.

He has argued that investors will need to look beyond large language model makers. Enterprises are turning to open-source technology from Europe and China as a viable, cheaper alternative, he said. The firm continues to focus on early-stage rounds. For a wider look at which funds are active in European AI this year, see our Which VCs Are Actually Backing European AI in 2026 overview.

How Does The Creandum Partnership Work?

Creandum was founded by Helgesson in 2003. The firm operates as an equal partnership: partners have equal pay, equal carry and equal voting rights. Cassel has been at the firm since its first year and remains based in Stockholm, with colleagues in London, Berlin and San Francisco. Other long-standing partners include Johan Brenner and Carl Fritjofsson, who has run the US hub.

The structure has let the firm stay concentrated on seed and Series A even as later-stage funds grew larger elsewhere. One in six of its portfolio companies has historically become a unicorn, according to the firm.
